QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
INITIATIVES (QII)
The journey of Quality in Malaysia healthcare system has started since 1980 from the growing awareness on the need for quality in day-to-day work. Following that, in 1985, the Quality Assurance Program (QAP) in the Ministry of Health was developed, which spurred a variety of quality improvement initiatives (QII) in the sector. The QII addressed diverse quality domains including safety, effectiveness, and timeliness.
In the Malaysian context, a quality improvement initiative (QII) is a continuous change process that is data-driven and based on systematically planned action. Its prime goal is to increase the likelihood of optimal quality of care measured by improved healthcare processes, outcomes and client experience.
To date there are more than 40 QIIs that had been introduced and monitored in the system. The QIIs were catalogued to give a snapshot of Malaysia health quality landscape by understanding the linkages of the various QIIs in specific function. These QIIs were mapped based on three different categories i.e. Regulatory-related QII, Specific QII which was further subdivided into four groups and Approach-based QII.
- Regulatory
- Improvement in Clinical Care
- Reducing Harm
- System Environment
- Patient, Community Involvement & Empowerment
