Safe Surgery Saves Lives
OVERVIEW
The Safe Surgery Saves Lives (SSSL) programme is a global initiative launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2008. The goal of the SSSL programme is to reduce the number of preventable surgical deaths and injuries around the world. The programme was established in Malaysia in 2009. Patient Safety Unit as Technical Secretariat for National SSSL Steering Committee to ensure the SSSL programme is running smoothly. SSSL Steering Committee members are hand picked from crucial services that involve in the implementation of the programme. The members includes surgeons, anaesthesiologists and OT nurses. We also had established SSSL Committee at state and facility level to enhance the implementation of the programme. 2nd edition SSSL Guideline was introduced in 2018 with new POCL check list.
Nationwide implementation of the SSSL Programme and SSSL Peri-Operative Checklist following Director-General of Health Malaysia Circular No.4 /2018. The implementation of SSSL program is monitored via audits and continuously improved by committee at national, state and facility level.Surgical Safety is one of the utmost priority in Malaysia and it is included one of the main goals in Malaysian Patient Safety Goals 2.0
