Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG)
OVERVIEW
Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) are statements that include recommendations intended to optimise patient care that are informed by a systematic review of evidence and an assessment of the benefits and harms of alternative care options. CPG is designed to help healthcare professionals in managing patients in an appropriate and effective way based on the best and current available evidence. It is one of the elements of good medical decision making which consider clinicians’ values and experiences, patients’ values and preferences, and availability of resources.
CPG development and implementation has been under the purview of Malaysia Health Technology Assessment Section (MaHTAS), Medical Development Division, MOH since April 2001. Since then, more than 100 CPGs has been developed/updated.
In 2008, MaHTAS started developing implementation strategies to disseminate the CPG in various format to cater different targeted audience such as Quick Reference, training module/national training of core trainer, monitoring of CPG echo training, launching and patient information leaflet. In 2011, its utilisation is being periodically monitored in selected health facilities. A manual on development and implementation of evidence-based CPG has been developed in 2015, outlining key elements of the relevant workprocess.
